Greeting

The most beautiful and modern educational institution in the country is being built in Mezőhegyes

In September 2021, we started the new academic year at the renewed Stud Farm’s School.

In the welcome page of our website, I will give you, the visitors, and detailed information about the construction works. We want to create a well-designed, disciplined and functional complex that supports the work of the teachers and children.

The COVID-19 epidemic, the weather conditions and the additional works ordered have not hindered the reconstruction of the main school building. A new portico was added in the centre of the main building of the School, creating a representative main entrance to the institution. In addition to the complete historic renovation of the façade and the roof cladding, energy modernisation was an important part of the project, as well as upgrading the furniture and equipment in the classrooms to meet the 21st century standards. The Hungarian Gazette of 24 December 2020 announced that the Stud Farm will receive a capital increase of HUF 9,550,000,000. Of this amount, HUF 2.8 billion will be used to modernise the seed plant, HUF 250 million to finance the local elements of Hungary’s Digital Agricultural Strategy, and the remaining funds will be used to finance additional investments related to the school.

The complete renovation of the Teacher's building was completed in December 2021. The project has restored the historic building of the Veterinary Villa to its original layout and romantic style.

The stud farm had a veterinary surgeon when it was founded, and later a number of doctors and assistants supervised the livestock in addition to the chief veterinarian. The importance of the stud farm was great, as there were several outbreaks of epidemics which decimated the herd, and during wartime the number of injured or sick animals – some of them war booty – on the stud farm increased significantly. The Romantic-style house was built for Sebastian Neumann, the Chief Military Veterinary Surgeon, who served in Mezőhegyes from 1 September 1859. A floor plan from 1880 survives in the collection of the Hungarian National Archives – the plan shows that the building was occupied by ‘Chief Veterinary Officer Neumann’ at the time of the survey. After extensive renovation, the school of the stud farm was given a teacher’s room and offices in the chief veterinary’s villa.  The refurbishment of the school (New Building) was completed in one and a half years, and was handed over in March 2023. It will also house the IT centre (server room), IT classrooms, the language lab and the library. Not only at the school’s headquarters, but also at the central machine repair station, the training workshop, which is the training base for field technicians, has been renovated.

The renovation and extension of the dormitory at the institution's headquarters has been completed. The building was reopened to students in November 2023

The number of places has been increased to 150, with each room having its own bathroom (shower, toilet). The three-storey building, with a significantly increased floor area, has modern furnishings and fittings reminiscent of a hotel. The dormitory is equipped with solar panels and is heated and cooled by a ground-source heat pump. It is planned to use the “Nonius Youth Hostel” as accommodation for camps and summer interns and as commercial accommodation during weekends and summer holidays. The Maintenance Manager will also pay particular attention to the restoration of the school’s internal park and the construction of public works.

The construction of the sports hall was the largest project ever undertaken at the school, due to its size and a gross construction cost of more than HUF 3 billion. The building was inaugurated on 25 May 2024.

The modern hall blends harmoniously and unobtrusively into both the historic and natural environment. The three-storey sports facility, with almost 3,000 square metres of floor space, includes traditional futsal, handball and basketball courts, a gym, fencing with electric scoring machines, a climbing wall with automatic self-locking system and a gamer room. The dimensions of the sports hall and the spatial positioning of the building show that its construction goes beyond the needs of the school and even beyond the needs of the Stud Farm. Citizens of Mezőhegyes can also play sport here, and the 350-seat grandstand makes the building suitable for use as an event centre.

"In addition to absolute respect for the built heritage, functionality and meeting the needs of the 21st century were the primary considerations in the design."

– said András Katona Katona, Chief Architect of DAW Architect Studio, Chief Architect of Mezőhegyes.

The planned budget for the construction of the municipal sports and leisure pool is nearly HUF 6 billion. The large pool will be 33.33 x 21 metres, with a water depth of 2.2 metres and a water temperature of 26-27°C. The facility will also include a 12 x 6 metre teaching pool with a water depth of 80 cm and a 6 metre diameter lap pool. On the upper floor there will be a multifunctional gym for 10-15 people and a wellness area with a smaller capacity.

The most beautiful and modern educational facility in the country will serve the entire population of the city. The 350 students who will occupy the building will come primarily from the region, but also from all over the country and beyond. The responsibility now lies with the school management and our teachers to infuse the new institution with new professional content, new ways of organising learning and new teaching methods.
