The National Stud and Educational Farm.

The National Stud and Educational Farm is the oldest state-owned estate in Europe, founded by Emperor Joseph II in 1784. The traditions preserved and brought to life here reflect the memory of 1000 years and even of pre-Conquest times, as Mezőhegyes shows that the Hungarian horse nation was and still is a nation of horses more than a millennium ago.  Today, it farms some 8,150 ha of arable land and 1,500 ha of forest. The small town of Mezőhegyes, with its many architectural and natural treasures, is an excellent destination for visitors, whether for family holidays, school trips or professional programmes, and is home to one of Europe’s most modern agricultural companies.

Our attractions: St George’s Roman Catholic Parish Church, Reformed Church, Central Stud Farm, Guardhouse, People’s Office (the old hospital, then the High School, now the Local History Collection), Stud Headquarters, Central Stables, Baking Barn-Bakeries-Drying Mill,  Peregi Guest House and School Museum in Major, Lake Békás, Rajta Forest.

Walking around the Stud Farm, you are surrounded by a special atmosphere created by the more than 200-year-old listed buildings and the magnificent ancient parks. The beauty of the lowland landscape, Lake Békás, the forests, hunting opportunities, horse and equestrian tourism, a wide range of programmes and a wealth of agricultural history make this small town attractive not only for those who love nature and tranquillity. The National Stud Farm regularly welcomes groups of visitors from early spring to late autumn.

Agricultural professional tourism

The robotised cattle farm at Major 11 is unique in Europe in terms of its technology and the number of cattle it produces. All animals are equipped with GPS trackers that measure physiological functions. The animals on the waterbed decide for themselves when to be milked, which is carried out by an automatic system with eight double-positioning systems – up to 16 animals at a time. Meanwhile, the cows are individually fed extra feed. A computer measures temperature and humidity and controls the ventilation system. The temperature is adjusted by lowering the tarpaulins. The two-stall, 1120-capacity facility has a capacity of 880 robots. Thanks to the new technology, the average daily volume of milk sold has increased significantly (from 25,208 litres in 2017 to over 33,000 litres today), while the number of animals has decreased. The average milking in August 2019 was 32.5 kg (1,100 cows), while in August 2023 it will be 41.65 kg (988 cows). Following the construction of the 11th Major plant, the complete reconstruction of the 81st Major plant is currently underway.

The Stud Farm is also responsible for breeding and preserving the genetic value of the protected indigenous Hungarian horse breeds established in Mezőhegyes, the Nonius, the Gidran, the Furioso-North Star (Mezőhegyes English half-breed) and the Hungarian sporting and riding breeds. The herd currently numbers 250 animals. Major studs 20 and 39 have been completely renovated and the central stud yard is currently being renovated. In addition to the successes in breeding, the equestrian sport has also reached a new level in recent years.

The Mezőhegyes Technical, Vocational School and Dormitory is a multi-purpose vocational training institution run by the stud farm. It is the exclusive dual training partner of the Company’s 112-year-old school, where students can acquire modern vocational skills in real-life working conditions. Members of the management and top professionals of the National Stud and Educational Farm share their knowledge and experience with the children. Using the modern technology available on the model farm, they aim to bring expertise to the fore in order to ensure that vocational training in Mezőhegyes provides the right answers to the ever-changing and renewing challenges of the economy and the labour market. The children will receive targeted training in the practical application of innovative production methods and solutions and modern technologies of the Mezőhegyes state model farm. In addition to training the agricultural professionals of the future, the aim is to ensure a highly skilled workforce for the Company. In eight years, the number of students has doubled: 338, of whom 145 are college students.
